Our Lady of Grace ✨
A while ago I was talking to my spiritual director and great friend Father Pete and we arrived to the topic of Marian depictions. He made the observation that although it has been theorized Mary’s Assumption happened around the time she may have been from 50 to almost 70 years old, she is rarely depicted in a non-youthful way. Even illustrations of the Assumption have her face be wrinkle-less and… as always… white.
Anyhow, that’s how this Our Lady of Grace came to be. She is definitely not 50, she looks older than that. But I don’t mind. Our Lady is said to have lived perhaps 11 years after the Crucifixion, Death and Ascension of her Son. I wanted to show it: a grown woman, who lived a full Earthly life.
There is always a conversation to be had about the way women’s aging vilified and the role it had to play in all this. But I am not smart enough to write that essay! I’ll leave that to all my theologians and society/culture writer friends here!
